Survey of Law Firm Competency Expectations for Associate Development

November 2020

Deadline extended to December 2

The Professional Identity Formation Work Groups of NALP’s Lawyer Professional Development and Law Student Professional Development Sections, in partnership with NALP and the Holloran Center for Ethical Leadership in the Professions at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, are conducting a survey to quantify competencies and developmental expectations for law firm associates, identifying commonalities and differences among the competencies emphasized by law firms. Additionally, this research will help law firms understand the varied ways in which competencies/developmental expectations are being used by law firms across the U.S. as part of the associate development and evaluation process.

We are asking U.S. law firms to please submit only one response per law firm to this survey. A PDF copy of this survey is posted below for review purposes, however, all responses should be submitted via the online survey. In order to minimize the possibility of duplicate submissions the survey invitation was sent to the NALP primary contact for each law firm. If you have questions, please contact Danielle Taylor at dtaylor@nalp.org.
