NALP Web Site Privacy Policy

NALP respects the privacy of its members and other visitors to its web sites. To protect online privacy, NALP has implemented the following policy.

Data collected by NALP is used to provide better service to NALP members and users of NALP's web sites. It is NALP's policy to collect and store personal information only if knowingly submitted by members and users. "Personal information" includes an individual's name, address, contact numbers, email addresses, and other individualized data. It is different from "aggregate data," which includes non-individualized information about an overall group, as well as users' IP addresses, number of hits per page, etc.

I. USE OF DATA COLLECTED BY NALP FROM ACTIVITY ON ITS SITES

In order to provide access to certain features of NALP's site(s), a cookie is placed on the user's computer. A cookie cannot read other data from your computer's hard disk and is not used to disseminate information about users over the Internet or to analyze information that users have provided. NALP does not allow third parties to set cookies from NALP's sites; cookies set by NALP are used only to pass information from the user to and among NALP's web servers. Most web browsers accept cookies automatically, but you can set your browser options to block cookies if you prefer. If the user declines attachment of a cookie, the user may not have access to the full benefits of NALP's web site(s).

General users - NALP does not collect any personal information from users browsing its web sites. Users to the public areas of NALP's web sites browse anonymously. Only aggregate data, such as IP addresses and the number of hits per page, are collected; these data do not provide any personally identifying information and are only used for internal analysis of web site usage and traffic.

NALP members - To gain access to NALP's members-only resources, members are asked to log in using some limited information such as username or email address and password or member number. These data are submitted voluntarily. When members log in, NALP's system will set a cookie in order to provide access to members-only information.

II. USE OF INFORMATION SUBMITTED BY NALP MEMBERS AND USERS

NALP Member Directory and Individual Profiles - NALP's Membership Directory is available online to members of the association as password-protected, members-only content. This information is provided voluntarily or contained in the member record of NALP’s association management system (AMS). The information collected on the member details page includes contact information, specialty information, demographic information, and volunteer leadership and interests, all provided voluntarily by members. As with all data collected by NALP, members can be assured that all demographic data will remain confidential; an individual's demographic information is not made public and will be used on a limited basis by NALP staff to assist NALP leaders in furthering the goals of fostering diverse leadership for the organization and enabling research analyses.

NALPconnect - NALP’s private online member community provides a forum for NALP members to share and interact with other community members. Each member profile includes basic contact details from the AMS and may contain other information entered voluntarily by members. By posting questions or material in the community, you grant to NALP and the members in NALPconnect the nonexclusive, world-wide, transferable right and license to display, copy, publish, distribute, transmit, print, and use such information or other material in any way and in any medium, including but not limited to print or electronic form.

Bookstore customers and conference registrants - NALP's web sites also use cookies to track bookstore shopping carts and conference registrations. The information collected in the bookstore and conference registration process may include credit card information. This information is provided voluntarily by users and will be used only for processing orders and registrations. NALP will never sell or trade this information.

Surveys - NALP frequently conducts surveys of members and non-members on various topics. All information provided in response to any NALP survey is provided voluntarily by users. Survey data will be used and reported confidentially and anonymously unless otherwise indicated at the time of survey completion.

NALP Directory of Law Schools Online Data Collection System (www.nalplawschools.org) and NALP Directory of Law Schools (www.nalplawschoolsonline.org) - The information collected by the Online Data Collection System includes comprehensive law school profile information and is published as the NALP Directory of Law Schools online. All information is provided voluntarily by users. Directory information will be provided to third-party vendors as necessary for efficient functioning of the data collection system and for publication.

NALP Directory of Legal Employers Online Data Collection System - The information collected in the Online Data Collection System includes comprehensive employer profile information and is published as the NALP Directory of Legal Employers online. All information is provided voluntarily by users. Directory information will be provided to third-party vendors as necessary for efficient functioning of the data collection system and for publication.

NALP Directory of Legal Employers public site, www.nalpdirectory.com - No specific information about individual users is collected except in the case of users who choose to take advantage of the "My List" or "Mail Merge" features, in which case a cookie will be set with the user's email address as the session identifier. Such email address will be provided voluntarily by the user and will only be used as a session identifier. NALP does not retain this information or use it to send email, create any mailing list or sell it to any third party, except in the case of communicating with users to resolve problems related to the system.

In some cases, law schools may choose to register some or all of their students within the NALP Directory system. In this case the information provided includes the student's name, email address and graduation year. NALP encourages law schools to use an opt-in system for such registration, obtaining permission from students before including them in the database. This information is not used by NALP except as session identifiers and for general usage statistics, and NALP will not compile or release these lists.

How does NALP use the data collected?

NALP member services and products - Generally NALP uses data collected to improve its own web site content; to respond to visitors' interests, needs and preferences; and to assess and develop new products and services.

Disclosures to third parties - NALP posts contact information online through the NALP Membership Directory. In addition, NALP incorporates information provided by users into the Membership Directory, the NALP Directory of Law Schools, the NALP Directory of Legal Employers, and conference manuals or handouts. NALP makes mailing labels available in print or electronic format to members and to reputable third-party organizations whose products or services may be of interest to users. The mailing labels include member names, organizations, and postal addresses, but do not include phone numbers, fax numbers or email addresses. In addition, third party organizations that participate as exhibitors or sponsors at NALP conferences receive copies of the conference manual, which may contain complete information on attendees. If you wish to be omitted from any of these sources, see the opt-out information below.

Credit card information - NALP does not disclose credit card account information provided by its members and customers except as necessary for completing transactions. Credit card information is used only for processing payments and guaranteeing hotel accommodations.

Opt-out - NALP provides members with the opportunity to remove their names and organizations from the list included in membership mailing labels that NALP sells to other organizations. Members can also choose not to have information displayed on NALP's online Membership Directory, a searchable database of NALP members available online to NALP members only or on NALPconnect, a private community available online to NALP members only. If you no longer wish to receive communications from NALP; no longer want to be included in NALP membership mailing labels provided to outside organizations; no longer wish to participate in NALPconnect; or no longer want to be included in NALP's online Membership Directory, you may specify what you want to "opt out" of by:

  • Sending an email with specifics to info@nalp.org;
  • Sending mail with specifics to NALP, Suite 401, 1220 19th St. NW, Washington, DC 20036;
  • Contacting NALP at 202-835-1001.
