"Can Competencies Drive Change in the Legal Profession?" (Chapter 5 from Innovating Talent Management), begins with a brief overview of the competency movement, then identifies and analyzes the changes taking place in the legal industry and the impact of these changes on law firms and law schools. It explores the extent to which these changes are reflected in competencies, provides a starting point for law firms and law schools to develop competencies, and reflects on the benefits that can be drawn from the competency development process. The chapter provides a framework for implementing competency models in law firms and law schools as well as focusing on stages, steps, and processes for organizational, team, and individual change. It concludes with the suggestion that the competency movement may end up being the standout initiative that provides a common platform for discussion and debate, and eventually the means to reinvent, rethink, and rebuild the legal industry.

Providing helpful tips, tools, and suggestions that support talent management professionals in their work as change agents and intrapreneurs, Innovating Talent Management acts as a resource for law firm leaders, legal department leaders, COOs, and CEOs as they consider their growth strategies and business priorities in the next decade. Law schools will also find this a helpful resource as they review, reshape, and relaunch their curricula to prepare graduates for the 21st century legal marketplace.
