"Innovation in Legal Education Through Collaboration Between Law Schools and Law Firms" (Chapter 14 from Innovating Talent Management) begins with an overview of the traditional training and education framework used for law students and lawyers, identifying at the same time the perceived gap in skills and training at law schools. It examines the relationship between law schools and law firms, and how the changes in law firms are being mirrored in law schools. The authors suggest that as these changes are client driven and focused on adding value, the best way to approach a reinvention of legal education is to view it as a continuum of knowledge, skills, and competencies as opposed to consisting of education in silos. The chapter also examines and critiques existing modes of collaboration at the places where the academy currently meets the profession. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for the reinvention of law school so that law students will be better prepared to enter practice. It opines that this can only be achieved through collaboration and innovation by all who have a stake in solving the problem, bridging current skills gaps, and supporting law graduates in enhancing their capabilities, improving their job prospects, and “hitting the ground running” for practice in the new normal.

Providing helpful tips, tools, and suggestions that support talent management professionals in their work as change agents and intrapreneurs, Innovating Talent Management acts as a resource for law firm leaders, legal department leaders, COOs, and CEOs as they consider their growth strategies and business priorities in the next decade. Law schools will also find this a helpful resource as they review, reshape, and relaunch their curricula to prepare graduates for the 21st century legal marketplace.
