The Recruiting Section is for NALP members who are responsible for, or who have an interest in, issues related to recruiting and hiring law students, new graduates and lateral attorneys.

Work Groups:

Annual Education Conference Planning
Brainstorm with Section membership on programming/speakers at the 2015 Annual Conference. Assist members through the completion of the RFP process. In developing topics, give careful consideration to those that would be appealing to mid-career professionals with 4-6 years of experience. Vice Chair: Amy Pretty, McGuireWoods.

Bulletin Article Planning
Solicit authors and contributions for feature length articles in the NALP Bulletin. Vice Chair: Lesli Hutchinson, Proskauer.

Lateral Hiring
Provide opportunities for those who specialize in lateral recruiting to communicate and network with one another through work group conference calls and NALPconnect. Develop resources aimed at lateral recruiting specialists, including programming at the annual education conference, Bulletin articles, results of environmental scanning efforts, and other resources to be made available on NALPconnect and the NALP website. Vice Chair: Wanda Woods, Baker Hostetler.

Small/Mid-Sized Firm
Provide opportunities for those who work for small/mid-sized firms to communicate and network with one another through work group conference calls and NALPconnect. Develop resources aimed at the small/mid-sized employer market, including programming at the annual education conference, Bulletin articles, results of environmental scanning efforts, and other resources to be made available on NALPconnect and the NALP website. Vice Chair: Soraya Walden, Jackson Walker.

Summit Conference Planning
The liaison will serve as an ex officio member of the 2015 Recruiting Summit Planning team. Prior to the Planning Meeting, which is scheduled for June, the liaison will survey the Section to compile a written list of possible sessions for the Summit and a list of possible speakers, which will be submitted to the Planning Committee well in advance of the Planning Meeting. These lists should include suggestions for Hot Topic Sessions. The liaision will also solicit proposals from Section members for the Summit and report back to the Section on the results of the Planning meeting. Collaborate with the Ethics and Standards Working Group in the Experienced Professionals Section to ensure appropriateness and relevancy of information gathered on forms.

Recruitment Professionals - 201 Course
Work with members of the Experienced Professionals Section to develop a follow-up course to the Management Foundations Course at Newer Professionals for Recruitment Professionals to be delivered at the 2014 Annual Education Conference. The course should be geared towards mid-career professionals with 4-6 years of experience.

SNAPSHOT Quick Takes Cutting Edge Information and Analysis, and Real-Time Data Collection
This Work Group will collaborate to develop real-time surveys. The group should identify the surveys for the year and prepare initial drafts. The surveys are intended to help NALP provide timely and relevant information to the membership on issues of importance. Possible topics for surveys include summer program, OCI and 1L recruiting. This Work Group will continue to collaborate with the Technology Advisory Group & Research Advisory Group to develop real-time surveys that allow for timely and relevant information to be distributed to the membership on issues of importance. Possible topics for surveys include diversity related hiring and lateral hiring. Vice Chair: Angela Welsh, Patton Boggs LLP and Shannon Williams, Carlton Fields.

NDLE Work Group (appointed)
The NDLE Work Group will continue its collaboration with the Technology Advisory Group and the Research Advisory Group to review and make recommendations regarding the scope of information in the NALP Directory of Legal Employers and alternative data collection and reporting methods that will allow for enhanced navigation, searchability, customization, and benchmarking. Experienced Hiring Work Group
This Work Group will examine the practice of judges hiring experienced attorneys as their law clerks. The group will identify to the extent of post-graduation unpaid intern hiring and how the experience is viewed by the interns and future legal employers. The group will also continue to examine the practice of clerkship openings after students have committee to work for one or two years. The group will bring together NALP members from the school side and the employer side to discuss the impact of such experience attorney hiring clerkship counseling, recruitment and retention. The results of these discussions will be shared with the membership either as Bulletin articles or future conference programs. Cutting Edge Information and Analysis, and Real-Time Data Collection
NALP’s new strategic plan calls for NALP to be the authority for reliable, comprehensive, objective, and strategic data, information and analysis on careers in the legal industry. This work group will collaborate with the Technology Advisory Group & Research Advisory Group to explore: 1) utilizing just-in-time data collection and delivery methods, when appropriate, and provide real-time results and analysis to targeted audiences. (Suggest 2-3 real-time/snapshot surveys) and 2) developing real-time technology for employers and law schools to report and track on campus interviews, callback interviews, offers and decisions. Evaluating Leadership
The traditional evaluation model places a heavy emphasis on grades and law school pedigree. This work group will explore and identify alternative measures of evaluation that move beyond these metrics and that demonstrate qualitative indicia of success and value.
